Is a photo worth 10,000 words?

Maybe, when it is telling a story, grabbing your attention, or touching something deep in your soul. Sometimes it is more than words can express.

But when it comes to photo criticism and/or comments, a photo is worth a dozen or couple of your words. I know when I’ve made comments on flickr.com I try to say something specific, even if only “Love the eyes” or “great lighting”, though if I took more time I could add other things that added to the photo so that it caught my eye.

When I go to a site to make specific critical comments, like some sites require when you add a photo, I do try to go into more detail addressing things I like or don’t like about the photo. I know that I have been helped by good critical comments – both positive and negative – about my photos.

Here, though, is a guy who has gone beyond making comments, or complaining about short general comments like “amazing!”, to giving some specific questions we can ask ourselves about the photos we are going to comment on, making our criticism more practical and useful to the photographer.

So, if you’re a photographer, or a photo critic, go check out this article on how to improve your comments.
