“I think, therefore I am.” So Rene Descartes eloquently addressed being-ness.
But what his human-ness? What qualities define being human? Maybe that should be what measurable qualities, as attributes such as soul cannot be measured by scientific means.
So what do we have?
A sense of morality?
A sense of history and future?
There are intelligent dogs (and, arguably, cats); gulls drop shells onto rocks to crack them open. Does this make them human? At what point would these characteristics, either individually or combined, result in being human?
It might be a bit more complicated than we think, if this article is any indication.
