Researchers at Harvard have figured out how to give the spark of life – or something like it – to computers, or at least programs, figuring out how to let them write their own programs. Gunarwardena, one of the researchers, says that when data is input to the program, the program is able to reason over it by writing its own program code, that can write its own program code, and so on.
He goes on to say, “This language is stepping into an unknown universe, when your computer starts building things for you. Your whole relationship with the computer becomes a different one. You’ve ceded some control to the machine. The machine is drawing inferences on your behalf and constructing things for you.”
Expect the arrival of the Terminator sometime before Christmas.
