Laptop theft security

26 09 2008

Laptops. Who among us hasn’t worried that ours would develop legs and walk off?

Security cable? Bought mine, carried it in the case, used it at hotels, the office (yes they’re my coworkers, but I can’t trust all 3000 of them!), but it’s a pain. Pain and inconvenience equals non-use. Non-use equals theft. Theft equals massive inconvenience, loss of income, increased expense, and loss of that one critical file that is no where else. (What, backups? Oh yeah, something else that is inconvenient, therefore not done, therefor resulting in data loss of that one critical file that is no where else. Same song, different verse.)

Realizing that that is what CAN happen, is there anything we can do to mitigate the problem? How about software that will help us track our laptop? No, it doesn’t guarantee that your laptop will not be stolen, that the data files will not be wiped, but it might help us find out where the laptop is and recover it.
