The Hindenburg was the dirigible that met its end in the infamous conflagration in Lakehurst, NJ, in 1937. Its modern-day counterpart is the ubiquitous Goodyear Blimp fleet found at every significant sporting venue in the US. There is no risk of a repeat of the demise of the Hindenburg, for today’s LTA (Lighter Than Air) airships are filled with non-volatile gases like helium rather than the risky and extremely flammable hydrogen.
Now Boeing, and other companies, are looking to get a commercial fleet of blimps going again, initially to lift heavy payloads in remote areas, such as logging in Canada and other work horse type endevors.
